About Patrick Bermingham

Patrick Bermingham is the CEO and fourth generation owner of Bermingham Construction Limited, which has been in business for over 109 years. As well as building foundations, Bermingham Foundation Solutions sells both equipment and engineering support around the world..

In the 13 years since Patrick Bermingham has run the company, revenues have increased to $60 million and its market reach has expanded to over 40 countries. He has introduced a well-received employee ownership plan and has also created a successful alliance with a private equity firm which has allowed the company even greater growth.

His business acumen was rewarded with an Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Ernst & Young in the category of manufacturing.  His engineering skills have also been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineering which presented him with the Martin Kapp Foundation Engineering Award.  His engineering exploits have been featured several times on the discovery channel, to the delight of his children.

His recent achievements include the design of a beam launcher for the American firm Flatiron along with the Italian firm Deal, to facilitate the construction a bridge over a wide North Carolina river.  Bermingham also lead the company in the creation of a massive cofferdam in the Niagara River, for the building of the new hydroelectric power station.  Back in 2003, he helped instigate one of the most significant geothermal projects in Canada by installing geothermal foundations in a federal building designed by Zeidler & Associates.

Bermingham has conducted both research and product development on a wide variety of equipment and foundation systems.   Bermingham invented: the Statnamic load testing method in conjunction with TNO, the Dutch National Research Council; a complete line of fuel-injected high-efficiency pile hammers; direct drive diesel hammers; and reverse circulation rock drilling equipment, as well as an underwater hammer for deep sea applications by the oil industry, which anchors foundations down at 3000 meters below sea level!

In 1975, he worked as a research assistant in the civil engineering laboratory at McMaster University.  He graduated from Trinity College School, attended Queens University and received a B.A. from London’s St. Martins School of Fine Arts.

Since 1983, he has worked in the foundation industry, developing new technologies and overseeing construction projects.  Currently, he is working on pile improvement technologies together with the use of geothermal circuits in foundations.

Bermingham is a member of the CGS, ADSC, PDCA, DFI and Ontario Association of Foundation Specialists.  He has published papers for the DFI annual conferences and international conferences as well as for the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s annual conference.  He also served for several years on the board of Circuit World which manufactures circuits for the aviation industry.  He is also in his second term as a Trustee in the Deep Foundations Institute.
